International Studies Major

Concentration Area 6:

Peace Studies

International Studies majors now have a sixth field they can choose as their primary area of concentration: Peace Studies. Persons taking Peace Studies as a primary or secondary area will be required to take:

 

     1.  PSCI 3500 Introduction to Peace Studies

 

     2.  at least one course in each of three other areas:

 

             Determinants of Violence

             Conflict Management

             Issues of Justice

  

To complete the remaining hours required to make peace studies either a primary or secondary area, students may choose courses in any of the three areas, as well as other approved Peace Studies electives, with internships being strongly recommended to fulfill part of those elective hours. The courses that have approved for each list are as follows:


Determinants of Violence:

ANTH 4600: Topics in Physical Anthropology

(When it is The Anthropology of Terrorism, or another appropriate topic)

ANTH 4610  Topics in Sociocultural Anthropology

(When it is Anthropology of War and Conflict, or another appropriate topic)

HIST 4260    (when the topic is appropriate)

PSCI 3100    (when the topic is appropriate)

PSCI 4640    Revolution and Political Violence

PSCI 4700    (when the topic is appropriate)

PSCI 4820    (when topic is appropriate, i.e., International Conflict, Ethnic Conflict).

Practicums in any other field (e.g., PSCI 3910; SOCI 4920; ECON 4920; ANTH 4920) where the experience has been approved by the Director of the Peace Studies Program or the Director of International Studies, and appropriate Special Project classes as approved by the Director.
