REQUIREMENTS FOR THE MINOR AND THE CERTIFICATE IN PEACE STUDIES

Students at the University of North Texas who wish to complete a concentration of academic work in the Peace Studies discipline may choose to complete either a Minor or a Certificate Program in Peace Studies.

Minor
Students wishing to obtain an Interdisciplinary Minor in Peace Studies must complete a minimum of 18 hours of courses in Peace Studies, including at least six hours of upper level courses. They must complete PSCI 3500 (Introduction to Peace Studies), and at least one course from each of these three areas: Determinants of Violence, Conflict Management, and Issues of Justice. Courses currently offered which satisfy the requirements in each of these areas are listed below:

Practicums in any other field (e.g., PSCI 3910; SOCI 4920; ECON 4920; ANTH 4920) where the experience is approved by the Director of the Peace Studies Program as being related to the Peace Studies field, and appropriate Special Project classes as approved by the Director.

Certificate
A Peace Studies Certificate may be earned by students who have completed a concentration of academic work in Peace Studies, regardless of their major or minor at UNT. A certificate will be given by the Department of Political Science to students who have completed 15 hours of courses in that area while maintaining a minimum grade point average of 3.0 in those courses. Courses in any major or minor and any courses that satisfy core requirements may be counted toward a Certificate in Peace Studies.

All recipients of the Certificate must take PSCI 3500 Peace Studies (prior to 2000 this was taught as a PSCI 4820 class) and at least one course from each of three areas: Determinants of Violence, Conflict Resolution, and Issues of Justice. Courses that satisfy the requirements in each of these areas are listed above.
